Nam Phong Dialogues

The US-Vietnam Research Center is pleased to introduce a new podcast series titled Nam Phong Dialogues by two young Vietnamese American scholars, Dr. Kevin Pham and Dr. Yen Vu. 

Dr. Pham is an assistant professor in the Department of Political Science at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania, while Dr. Vu is a literature faculty at Fulbright University Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City.

As these scholars describe,

Nam Phong Dialogues is a podcast where two Vietnamese American academics have casual chats on Vietnamese history. We discuss intellectual history, political thought, and social change, in addition to what it means to be Vietnamese American in the US. 

To learn more about the podcast series, please listen to the trailer. In the first podcast, Dr. Pham and Dr. Vu introduce themselves and further explain what it means to be Vietnamese Americans studying Vietnam. 

In the second podcast, they discuss historian Martina Nguyen’s new book on the Tự Lực Văn Đoàn Literary Group that was active in the 1930s when Vietnam was still a French colony. The Group is commonly acknowledged as the most influential group on Vietnamese literature, but it is less widely known that leaders of the Group were also championing a popular movement for social reform and progressive causes.
